Weather and sea by month
Honest expectations:
- April: 15-19 C air, 16-18 C sea. Mostly dry and sunny but possible rain. Sea is cold; only the brave swim.
- May: 19-23 C air, 18-21 C sea. Increasingly pleasant. Swimming becomes realistic from mid-May.
- Early June: 23-26 C air, 21-23 C sea. Effectively summer. This is our favorite stretch - warm sea, no crowds.
- September: 22-26 C air, 22-24 C sea. Warm sea, thinner crowds after the first week. Excellent overall.
- Early October: 18-22 C air, 21-23 C sea. Last realistic swimming month. Light fall feel inland.
- Late October: 14-19 C air, 19-21 C sea. Beach days getting unusual; restaurants thinning out.
The southern bora (jugo) wind in October can bring 2-3 day rain stretches. Pack a light waterproof.
What is open
Year-round basics: supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies, banks, fuel stations, the Heritage Museum (reduced hours), and a handful of restaurants and cafes.
By month:
- April: 30-40% of restaurants open. Hotels in Biograd reopen mid-April. Aquapark Dalmatia closed.
- May: 70% open by mid-May. Aquapark Dalmatia opens late May. Most boat trips start running first week of May.
- September: still 90%+ open. Most things slow to off-season hours around Sept 15.
- October: 50-60% open. Most boat operators stop late October. Aquapark closes early October.
The Martha's Oliveyard side of things runs from April through October.
Quiet beaches and walks
Off-season beaches are the best version of themselves - empty, calm, and the sea is often clearer than in summer (fewer swimmers stirring sediment).
- Soline beach in April-May: bring a wetsuit if you want to swim, or just walk the coastal path 5 km round trip.
- Bosana / Crvena luka in September-October: the picture-perfect cove without the July crowd.
- Sveti Filip i Jakov western seafront at any time off-season: long flat walk, almost empty, beautiful light.
Best inland walks:
- The 30 km cycle loop around Vransko jezero is best in April-May (wildflowers, bird migration) and September-October (mild temperatures). Bring a bike from Pakostane rental.
- The Kamenjak viewpoint trail is 3 km return and especially beautiful in golden hour.
Day trips that are better off-season
Some places are objectively better outside July-August:
- NP Krka: catastrophic queues at Skradinski buk in summer. In May or September you walk straight in. Tickets cheaper too (around 25 EUR off-peak vs 40 EUR peak).
- Zadar: the old town in October feels lived-in rather than packed. Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun work in any weather.
- Vransko jezero: bird migration in April-May and September is dramatic. Local guides occasionally run dawn bird-watching tours.
- Plitvice Lakes: shoulder season is best - the waterfalls are at peak flow in spring and the autumn colors in October are excellent.
Kornati day trips run less reliably off-season; check with operators 2-3 days ahead.
Food, wine, and slow days
Off-season is when Croatian food shines. Konobas slow down, the menus go back to seasonal classics:
- April-May: spring lamb (janjetina), wild asparagus (asparagus), young goat (jaretina), squid season opens.
- September: tuna season, late fig harvest, first new wines.
- October: olive harvest. Several Sveti Filip i Jakov cooperatives do morning tours and tastings during harvest (usually mid-late October).
Wine tastings at Stancija Polje run year-round but feel especially relaxed off-season - the winemaker has time to talk.
Off-season is also the time we recommend Martha's Oliveyard most strongly. The villa, the pool, and the terrace work best when you have the whole place to yourselves and the area is quiet.
