What Vransko jezero is

Vransko jezero (literally "Vrana Lake") sits inland between Pakostane and Pirovac, separated from the Adriatic by a narrow karst ridge. Despite the proximity to the sea, the water is freshwater - fed by underground karst springs.

The lake is 30 km2 in area, about 13 km long and 2-3 km wide. Depth is 2-4 m through most of the lake (shallow).

It is one of Croatia's most important bird habitats - 252 recorded species, including herons, terns, marsh harriers, and reed warblers. The lake sits on a major Mediterranean migration route.

The Nature Park (Park prirode) covers the lake and surrounding wetlands.

How to spend a half-day

Recommended schedule for first-time visitors:

  1. 9 a.m. - Drive to the Park Information Centre in Pakostane (Crljenkova 67a). Pick up a free map.
  2. 9:30 a.m. - Drive 5 minutes to the Kamenjak viewpoint trailhead. Hike the 3 km return trail (1 hour). The view at the top - lake on one side, Adriatic and Kornati on the other - is the iconic Vransko view.
  3. 11 a.m. - Drive 10 minutes to one of the lakeside konobas (Konoba Tona is our regular). Grilled freshwater fish (carp, eel, mullet) is the regional specialty. Lunch 18-30 EUR per person.
  4. 1 p.m. - Optional: rent bikes back in Pakostane and ride a section of the 30 km lake loop (the eastern shore is the most scenic).

Or skip the bike and head back to the villa for a swim.

Bird-watching

Best times: April-May and September - peak migration. The lake hosts visiting Northern European waterbirds.

Best spots:

  • Eastern shore (less developed, more reeds)
  • Bird-watching tower at Crkvine (signposted from the park information centre)
  • Pristanište small dock and surrounding wetland

Bring binoculars. Common sightings in summer: little egret, grey heron, marsh harrier, mallard, coot. In migration season: numerous wader species, occasional spoonbill, glossy ibis.

For dedicated birders, the park information centre occasionally offers guided dawn walks - check ahead.

Cycling the lake loop

The 30 km lakeside cycle loop is the best inland cycling in the area. Flat, mostly gravel, some sections of paved road, very little traffic. Allow 2-3 hours including stops.

Highlights along the loop:

  • Crkvine bird-watching tower (km 5)
  • Konoba Tona (km 12) - lunch stop
  • Pristanište wetland boardwalk (km 18)
  • Returning views of Kamenjak from the western shore

Bike rental in Pakostane: 5 EUR/hour, 20 EUR/day. Helmets and locks included; bring water and snacks.

Best season: April-June and September-October. Avoid July-August midday heat - little shade on the trail.

Konobas around the lake

Several small konobas dot the lakeshore - mostly family-run, focused on freshwater catch:

  • Konoba Tona (eastern shore, 12 minutes from Pakostane) - our regular. Grilled carp, eel, mullet. Lamb if you book ahead. 18-30 EUR per person.
  • Konoba Riva (lakeside in Pristanište) - smaller menu, beautiful waterside terrace.
  • Restaurant Vrana (Vrana village) - traditional menu, busiest weekends.

Reservations recommended in peak season. Most have a small play area for kids.
