Unmarked coves on the coastal path
Between Sveti Filip i Jakov and Pakostane, the coastal footpath winds along the shore for about 8 km. Off the path, dozens of small pebble coves are wedged between rocks. None are signposted. Most have space for 5-10 towels.
How to find them: walk south from Sveti Filip i Jakov seafront. After about 1.5 km the path starts passing small access trails on the right - take any of them. Each cove has a slightly different feel; the best ones are tiny and you walk through pine before reaching the water.
What to bring: water, food, shade, towels. There are no bars or facilities. Take all trash back.
Pasman island - bigger isolated beaches
For a quiet beach without the cove constraints, take the 5-minute car ferry from Biograd to Tkon on Pasman island. Drive 10-15 minutes along the island coast and you find longer beaches with very few people.
Best Pasman coves:
- Sovinje beach (sandy pockets between pebbles, family-friendly)
- Mali Pasman / Veli Pasman bays on the southwest side
- Plaza Lokva near Neviane
Ferry runs every 30-60 minutes in summer. A whole day on Pasman feels like a much more remote escape than 15 km would suggest.
Best times for quiet at the popular beaches
Even Soline and the town beach are quiet at certain times:
- Early morning (7-9 a.m.): empty almost any day in summer. Sea is calm and clear.
- Late afternoon (5 p.m. onwards): families with kids leave for dinner. Sunset swim is delightful.
- Mid-week: less day-tripper traffic from Zadar/Sibenik.
- Mid-May, mid-September, October: any time of day is reasonable. Off-season is the easiest way to get quiet at otherwise busy places.
For Drazica and Janice, mid-afternoon (2-4 p.m.) is often the quietest because most beach-goers retreat indoors for lunch.
Etiquette for secluded coves
Quiet spots stay quiet because people respect them:
- Pack out all trash, including cigarette butts
- Keep voices and music low (sound carries on water)
- Do not light fires - illegal and obvious
- Do not collect rocks, shells, or sea life
- If a cove is occupied when you arrive, walk to the next one - do not crowd
- Park only where signposted; no parking on access roads
Local fishermen sometimes use small coves to land boats - give them space.
