Day Trip to Krka National Park from Biograd na Moru

Krka National Park is the second-most-visited national park in Croatia - a freshwater river system with seven waterfalls and the famous Skradinski buk. From Biograd na Moru it is a 50-60 minute drive (60 km). Entry is 25-40 EUR depending on season; plan 3-4 hours inside the park.

How to get there from Biograd

By car: 60 km / 50-60 minutes via the D8 coastal road or the faster A1 motorway. We recommend the motorway route in summer because the D8 has heavy traffic.

Park entrances:

  • Skradin (most popular, ferry to Skradinski buk included with ticket) - exit motorway at Skradin, follow signs
  • Lozovac (drive to the top, walk down) - direct car access closer to the waterfalls
  • Roski slap (less crowded but smaller waterfalls) - further drive

For first-time visitors, use Skradin entry: park at the marked lot, walk to the boat dock, take the included ferry up the canyon to Skradinski buk. The boat ride is a highlight.

By organised tour from Biograd: 35-55 EUR per person including transport, park entry, and a guide. Saves the driving but ties you to a schedule.

Park entry, hours, and seasons

Entry fee varies dramatically by season:

  • Peak (June 15 - September 15): 40 EUR adult, 35 EUR student, kids under 7 free
  • Shoulder (April, May, October): 25 EUR adult
  • Winter (November-March): 7 EUR adult

Hours typically 8-20 in peak season, 9-16 in winter. Tickets cheaper online ahead of time and not subject to entrance queues.

Buy tickets the night before in peak season - the gate sells out by 11 a.m. on hot August days.

Skradinski buk and the main trail

The headline attraction. Skradinski buk is a series of 17 cascading waterfalls dropping 47 m through travertine pools. The main walking trail is a 1.9 km wooden boardwalk loop taking 1-1.5 hours at a slow pace.

The loop passes:

  • The main waterfall pool (currently no swimming since 2021)
  • Several mills (Hrvatski mlinovi - some active as museums)
  • Smaller cascades and pools
  • The boat dock back to Skradin

Swimming: not allowed at Skradinski buk since 2021. Allowed only at Stinice or Roski slap (different entry points). Bring swim gear only if visiting one of those.

Beating the crowds

Krka gets seriously busy in summer. Strategies:

  • Arrive at opening (8 a.m. in summer). The first hour is the only time the boardwalks are not jammed.
  • Visit in shoulder season (May, June, September) - half the crowd, full beauty
  • Use Lozovac entrance instead of Skradin - smaller crowd, no boat queue
  • Avoid weekends in July-August - day-tripper traffic peaks
  • Mid-week is 30% quieter than weekends

In peak August, the boardwalk has lines like a theme park. Plan accordingly.

What to bring + practical tips

Pack:

  • Water (essential in summer)
  • Sun hat
  • Comfortable shoes (the boardwalk is wood, not slippery, but the parking-to-boat walk has gravel)
  • Light rain jacket (the boardwalk passes spray zones)
  • Cash or card for snacks (limited food inside the park)
  • Camera

Skip:

  • Swimsuit (no swimming at the main area)
  • Beach towel
  • Heavy backpack

Park has paid bathrooms inside (1-2 EUR), small food kiosks (3-7 EUR for sandwiches), and a souvenir shop.

Frequently asked questions

About 60 km / 50-60 minutes by car via the D8 coastal road or the A1 motorway. The motorway route is faster and avoids summer traffic. Park entrances at Skradin (most popular) or Lozovac (less crowded). Organised day tours from Biograd run 35-55 EUR per person all-in.

Not at Skradinski buk (the main waterfall area) - swimming has been banned there since 2021 to protect the travertine. Swimming is allowed at Stinice and Roski slap, different entry points 30-45 minutes deeper into the park. Bring swim gear only if visiting those.

Peak season (June 15 - September 15): 40 EUR adult, 35 EUR student, kids under 7 free. Shoulder (April, May, October): 25 EUR. Winter: 7 EUR. Cheaper if bought online ahead. Tickets often sell out by 11 a.m. on August weekends.

May, June, or September - sea-level temperatures, all trails open, half the summer crowd. Early morning at opening (8 a.m.) gives you the boardwalk almost empty in any month. In peak July-August arrive at opening or skip.

Yes - the boardwalk is flat, the boat ride from Skradin is a highlight, and the scenery keeps kids engaged. The 1.9 km loop takes 1-1.5 hours which is manageable. Bring water and snacks; pace stops at the museums and viewpoints. Avoid peak heat (12-15) with very young kids.

Krka if you have one day - it is 60 km vs 165 km for Plitvice, easier to do return same day. Plitvice has bigger, more dramatic lakes but the drive eats half your day. Most first-time visitors do Krka from Biograd; save Plitvice for a different trip.
