Sunset spots that work
The promenade in Biograd is the easy choice - walk it 45 minutes before sundown, find a bench facing west, and the light over the Pasman island silhouette is genuinely cinematic. Best 2 hours of the day on the Croatian coast.
For something quieter:
- The end of the Soline coastal path - 25-minute walk from Biograd centre, ends in a small pine-shaded headland with a bench and almost no one around.
- Sveti Filip i Jakov western seafront - 6 minutes by car from Biograd, smaller, calmer, and the light over the bay is unobstructed.
- Kamenjak viewpoint above Vransko jezero - 10 minutes by car, 15 minutes uphill on foot, and the view at golden hour (lake on one side, sea on the other) is the most-photographed spot in the area.
Pack a bottle of Posip from a local shop and you have a no-cost evening.
Sunset boat trips
Several local skippers run sunset cruises from Biograd and Pakostane marinas. Typically 2-3 hours, departing 5-7 p.m. depending on the season, around 35-50 EUR per person. Smaller boats take 6-12 guests, larger party boats up to 30 - ask before booking which type you are getting.
The best route is into the Pasman channel with a stop in one of the small bays for swimming, then a slow ride back to the marina at sunset. Most include a drink and a small snack; some advertise as "private" - worth the extra for a couple.
Book a day ahead in peak season. In April, May, and October you can usually walk to the marina and find a boat the same evening.
Quiet beaches for two
Skip the busy town beach and Soline for a romantic afternoon. Better choices:
- Drazica beach, 12 minutes from Martha's by car. Small pine-shaded pebble cove. No bar - bring everything. Quietest in the 2-5 p.m. lull.
- Bosana / Crvena luka, 14 minutes by car. The picture-perfect cove of the area. Red pine cliffs, deep water - perfect for snorkeling. Busy on weekends in July and August; quiet on weekdays.
- Janice beach in Pakostane, eastern edge. Long, shallow, less crowded than Soline.
- Unmarked coves between Sveti Filip i Jakov and Pakostane - walk the coastal path until you find one that feels right. Most have space for 2-4 towels.
In May, June, and September you can have these places almost to yourselves.
Konobas and quiet restaurants
For dinner, avoid the busy promenade in Biograd and head one street back or out to a nearby village. Our recommendations after years of sending guests:
- Konoba Barba in Sveti Filip i Jakov (2.5 km from Martha's) - the most reliable konoba in the area. Grilled fish, home-made pasta, fair prices. Reserve in summer.
- Casa Vecchia in Biograd (2.4 km from the villa, near the marina) - more formal, good for a "special" dinner. Italian and Dalmatian.
- Konoba Tona near Vransko jezero - lamb and home-made wine. Slow service in the best way. 12 minutes by car.
- Restoran Sveti Krsevan in Pakostane - small, calm, seafront table with a view.
For breakfast as a couple, Caffe bar Fabio in Sveti Filip i Jakov has the best seafront coffee in the area. 5 minutes from the villa.
Wine tastings, olive oil, and a slow morning
Two genuinely good wine tastings within 15 minutes of the villa:
- Stancija Polje (winery near Pasman ferry) - small family operation, native Posip and Plavac mali grapes. Around 20 EUR per person for a 4-wine tasting with a small snack. Book 24 hours ahead.
- Pasman wineries - take the 5-minute car ferry from Biograd to Tkon, then drive 15 minutes inland. Several small wineries open by appointment.
For something different, an olive oil tasting - Martha's Oliveyard has 11 olive trees, and the local Sveti Filip i Jakov cooperative does morning tours and tastings in October during harvest season. Outside of harvest, ask us when you arrive; some local growers do private tastings off-season.
A slow morning at the villa with coffee on the terrace, breakfast we leave on the table, and the pool to yourselves is one of the things our guests mention most often.
