Plitvice Lakes Day Trip From Biograd na Moru

Plitvice Lakes is Croatia's most famous national park - 16 turquoise lakes cascading through karst limestone, connected by 70+ waterfalls and 18 km of wooden boardwalks. From Biograd na Moru it is a long day: 2 hours each way (165 km), 4-6 hours inside the park. Most visitors do it once and prefer Krka for repeat trips.

How to get there

By car: 165 km / 2 hours from Biograd via the A1 motorway to Gospic exit, then country road. The drive is the limiting factor of the day - leave Biograd by 7 a.m. to be at the park gates at 9 a.m.

Organised tour from Biograd: 50-80 EUR per person, full-day (10-12 hours), includes transport, park ticket, and a guide. Saves the driving but ties you to a schedule. Most operators offer this.

No realistic train or bus option for a day trip - public transport adds hours.

Tickets, hours, entrances

Entry fee (highly variable by season):

  • Peak (July, August): 40 EUR adult, 25 EUR student, kids under 7 free
  • Shoulder (April-June, September-October): 23-30 EUR adult
  • Low (November-March): 10-15 EUR adult

Hours 7 a.m. - 19 p.m. in summer, shorter in winter.

Two entrances:

  • Entrance 1: closer to the Lower Lakes (more dramatic waterfalls)
  • Entrance 2: closer to the Upper Lakes (longer cascade chain)

For first-time visitors, Entrance 1 is the better starting point. Park at the entrance lot (3 EUR per hour).

Buy tickets online a day or two ahead in summer - the gate sells out. Tickets cap daily visitor numbers since 2019.

Walking the park

Plitvice has 8 marked walking routes (labeled A-K) from 2 hours to 8 hours total. The boardwalks pass directly over and alongside the cascading water.

Recommended for a day trip from Biograd:

  • Route C (4-6 hours) from Entrance 1 - covers Lower Lakes, electric boat across Kozjak (the biggest lake), Upper Lakes, train back to Entrance 1. The classic full Plitvice experience.
  • Route B (3-4 hours) - Lower Lakes only. Good if time is short or weather is iffy.

The boardwalks are flat but can be slippery in spots. Wear closed-toe shoes (no flip-flops). Bring water and snacks (limited food inside).

Swimming is not allowed anywhere in the park since 2000.

Plitvice vs Krka from Biograd

Honest comparison:

Plitvice:

  • 2 hours each way drive
  • 16 lakes, 70+ waterfalls, longer trails
  • More dramatic scenery overall
  • More crowded (10,000+ visitors per day in summer)
  • No swimming

Krka:

  • 50-60 minutes each way drive
  • 7 waterfalls focused on Skradinski buk
  • More accessible, easier with kids
  • Less crowded but still busy in summer
  • Swimming at Roski slap and Stinice entry points

For a single national park visit from Biograd, most people pick Krka because it costs half a day less and works in any weather. Plitvice is worth the long day if you have already seen Krka, you are a serious nature lover, or you specifically want the iconic turquoise-lake photos.

Frequently asked questions

About 165 km / 2 hours each way via the A1 motorway and country road. The drive is the limiting factor - a Plitvice day trip from Biograd is 12+ hours door to door. Most visitors leave Biograd by 7 a.m. and return by 9-10 p.m.

For first-time visitors with one national park to spare, Krka usually wins - it is closer (50 min vs 2h), cheaper, works in any weather, and you can swim at certain entry points. Plitvice is more dramatic but costs a full day on the road. Pick Plitvice only if you have multiple days and have already seen Krka.

Peak July-August: 40 EUR adult, 25 EUR student, kids under 7 free. Shoulder (April-June, September-October): 23-30 EUR. Low (November-March): 10-15 EUR. Buy online a day or two ahead in summer - daily visitor numbers are capped and tickets sell out.

No - swimming has been banned in all park lakes since 2000 to protect the travertine and water chemistry. If you want a swim during your nature park day, choose Krka (Roski slap and Stinice still allow swimming) or stay near Biograd and use the beach.

The most popular Route C (Lower Lakes + boat + Upper Lakes) takes 4-6 hours of actual walking and boating. Shorter Route B (Lower Lakes only) is 3-4 hours. With break, lunch, and getting to/from the entrance, allow 6-8 hours inside the park.

Mixed - kids 8+ usually love the boardwalks and the boat ride, but the long drive (4 hours total) and the walking distance (4-6 hours) wear out younger kids. Krka is a much easier national park day from Biograd. Save Plitvice for older kids or a multi-day trip.
