Official dog beaches
Croatia has a small but growing number of officially designated plaza za pse (dog beaches). In the Biograd area:
- Biograd marina dog beach - at the edge of the marina near Camping Park Soline. Pebble shore, fenced area, fresh water access for dogs to drink. Free.
- Pakostane dog section - a marked small stretch at the western end of the village seafront. Less formal but tolerated.
- Drage dog beach - 3 km south of Pakostane. Larger area, more space.
Bring a leash, water for your dog, a towel, and waste bags. Most dog beaches do not have shade - bring a small umbrella or beach tent.
Quiet coves where dogs are tolerated
On the unmarked coves between Sveti Filip i Jakov and Pakostane, dogs are tolerated outside peak hours. The local etiquette:
- Off-season (April, May, October): dogs welcome almost anywhere
- Early morning (before 9 a.m.) and late afternoon (after 6 p.m.) in summer: usually fine
- Mid-day in peak summer: do not bring dogs to main beaches; they may be asked to leave
For a dog-friendly off-the-beaten-path beach, walk south from Sveti Filip i Jakov seafront and find a small cove away from other beach-goers.
Beaches where dogs are not allowed
In peak season (July-August, daylight hours), dogs are not allowed at:
- Soline beach
- Biograd town beach
- Janice beach in Pakostane
- Bosana / Crvena luka resort beach section
- Most organised beaches with sunbed rentals
Fines for dogs on these beaches can be 100-500 EUR in theory, though enforcement varies. Even where unenforced, respect other beach-goers.
Practical tips for dog beach days
- Water: dogs dehydrate fast in summer heat. Bring 1-2 L per dog for a half-day beach trip.
- Shade: most dog beaches lack natural shade. Pack a small beach tent or umbrella.
- Pebbles and hot stones: in July-August, pebbles get very hot at midday. Avoid mid-day with dogs.
- Waste bags: always - and use them. Dog poop on beaches is the main reason for restrictions.
- Sea salt: rinse your dog after swimming, especially long-haired breeds. Cold outdoor showers exist at Soline (legal use even for dogs at the dog beach).
- Other dogs: most Croatian dog beaches are social - expect off-leash dogs. If your dog is reactive, choose quiet coves instead.
