Where the water is clearest
Water clarity in the Pasman channel is consistently excellent - typical visibility 8-15 m. The clearest spots:
- Bosana / Crvena luka: deep, sheltered, rocky edges. Best snorkeling water in the area.
- Drazica: clear pebble cove with rocky edges. Less crowd means less sediment.
- Unmarked coves: small coves between Sveti Filip i Jakov and Pakostane often have visibility past 12 m.
Water clarity drops slightly at Soline and the town beach in peak summer afternoons because of swimmer activity.
For shallow swimming (kids, non-swimmers)
If you need to stand:
- Soline: shallow 50 m out. The clear first choice. Lifeguard, sunbeds, beach bar.
- Janice in Pakostane: shallow for 15-20 m. Less crowded.
- Biograd town beach: concrete platform with steps into shallow water + thin pebble strip. Lifeguard in summer.
All three are family-friendly. None require boat access.
For deep-water swimming and diving
For confident swimmers who want depth:
- Bosana / Crvena luka: deep within 5 m of shore. Cliff jumping spots from 3-8 m (at your own risk).
- Drazica edges: rocky drop-offs along the cove edges, perfect for snorkeling deeper.
- Punta at the western end of Pakostane: rocky bathing platforms with direct access to deep water. Used by lap swimmers and free-divers.
- Open water from any beach: swim 50 m out from most beaches and the water is 4-8 m deep.
For the longest open-water swim, try the 2 km crossing from Sveti Filip i Jakov to the small uninhabited islet offshore - local favorite, do it with a kayak escort.
When the sea is best
Sea temperature by month:
- April: 16-18 C (cold)
- May: 18-21 C (cool, swimmable mid-month onward)
- June: 21-24 C (excellent)
- July-August: 24-27 C (peak)
- September: 22-24 C (warmer than May)
- October: 19-21 C (cooling)
- November-March: 13-16 C (not realistic)
Best calm-water times: early morning before maestral wind (10-11 a.m. onset) and after sunset. Mid-day in peak summer can be busy and warm; the maestral keeps things refreshing but stirs the surface.
Avoid swimming in jugo (southern wind) conditions - rough seas, occasional jellyfish drift onto shore.
