How to get there
By car: 25 km / 30 minutes from Biograd. Take the D8 south to Vodice, then the marked turn for Murter via the bridge at Tisno. The bridge connects the mainland to the island; bridge opens to let boats pass at scheduled times (check the schedule if driving back during evening).
The bridge is the only road access; no ferry needed.
Public bus: limited service, twice daily in summer, costs roughly 6-8 EUR. Slow. Most visitors drive.
Murter village and Slanica beach
Murter village is the largest settlement on the island - a working fishing port with a small old centre, a few cafes on the waterfront, and several Kornati tour operators based at the marina.
Slanica beach is the main draw - a sandy-pebble bay about 1 km west of Murter village, with shallow water and pine shade. It is genuinely sandy in places (rare on the Croatian coast). Family-friendly but busy in peak summer.
Cigrada beach next door is also pebble-sand and quieter.
Most boat trips to the Kornati and visits to nearby small islands (Vrgada, Lavsa) depart from Murter marina or Jezera (smaller village on the southern side).
Betina, Jezera, Tisno
Betina village is famous for its wooden shipbuilding tradition - the Museum of Wooden Boats documents the local boatbuilding craft, with examples of traditional Dalmatian boats in the small harbour. Worth 45 minutes if you are interested in maritime history.
Jezera on the southern coast is a smaller village with a quieter waterfront. The view across to Tijesno bridge and the open Kornati channel is beautiful at sunset.
Tisno (on the mainland side of the bridge) is famous for the The Garden festival scene - several large music festivals are held here in summer (Love International, Defected Croatia). If you are not into festivals, drive through; otherwise plan a night.
When and why to go
Reasons to visit Murter from Biograd:
- Kornati boat tour from Murter is slightly cheaper than equivalent from Biograd
- Slanica is one of the few genuinely sandy beaches in the area
- The Museum of Wooden Boats in Betina if you like maritime history
- Quieter atmosphere than Biograd centre
Skip Murter if:
- You only have a few days and have not seen Kornati, Zadar, or Krka yet
- You want a beach but already plan to swim at Soline (very similar quality)
Murter is best as a relaxed half-day on a sunny afternoon, not a destination day trip.
